I am currently in a moment of transition. I was that person who always had one (or two, or three) knitting projects on the go, but an ongoing relationship with arthritis means that until I can come up with an adaptive device to make that possible, my knitting is on hold.
Which is complicated. Knitting is a mindful activity, and it was very helpful in managing my complicated relationship with pain and fatigue in the rest of my body. I am still to find its replacement. Glitch art maybe? Revisiting the zine-making of my youth?
In my 20s, I was very invested in DIY Culture. This included writing a zine with a group of my friends called Losergurrrl Zine, helping out run an independent music and zine distribution service called Choozy Distribution and doing different radio shows like Losergurrls, Megaherz, Dykes on Mics on Brisbane Community Radio station 4ZzZfm. In my 30s, I ran and helped at underground Brisbane events, including women’s and trans-only events, fundraisers, and Reclaim the Streets. I also was part of a small organic food-buying group called Home Co-Op. Later, in my 30s, I volunteered at the Red Rattler in Syndey, behind the bar, as the volunteer coordinator and as a stage manager.
